Discover Sint Maarten

Dutch Sint Maarten has a very rich history that's been shared with France in a treaty that divided the island into two territories and has been peacefully in effect for over 375 years.

One of the best ways to visit the main city of Philipsburg and it's many hidden charms that you wont see from a tour bus is by bicycle, like true Dutch people who know bicycles probably better than any other nation.

While you're out riding your bike, you may want to visit these points of interest and businesses.

Salt pickers landmark In Sint Maarten

The Salt Pickers Landmark

The history of the island of Saint Martin is centered on the salt industry. The first inhabitants called it Soualiga - the "Land of Salt". The salt industry was a very hard life for those involved. Workers included children, senior citizens, slaves, and free citizens from the Dutch and the French side of the island. In honor of their salt industry heritage, the government of Sint Maarten has erected a group of sculptures, called the Salt Pickers, showing workers engaged in the various aspects of salt harvesting. Five figures are depicted. The central figure is a man using a shovel to mine the salt. A man and a woman are transporting a large tray of salt while two women are shown gathering salt.

The Dutch Blonde Beach Bar and Restaurant

The Dutch Blonde Beach Bar and Restaurant on the boardwalk in Philipsburg is probably the easiest place to find with its huge Windmill out front.

The restaurant is so much more than you would expect. They serve amazing food and Dutch specialties and fabulous drinks, that all come with a great view from the second-floor terrace. A real surprise is, they also have themed escape rooms which are so much fun and unique.

Dutch Blonde is also a locally owned and run award winning beer company.  In fact, you can take a tour of the brewery situated not too far from the cruise port terminal just a short bike ride away.  (Reservations are required due to its popularity)

Dutchie’s Tip:  Stop in for a drink or something to eat and mention Dutchie’s E-Cycle and you will be treated to a complimentary Beer or Wine tasting for Free.

Le Café

Situated on the east end of the boardwalk closest to the port you will find Le Café.  An authentic French café right here on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten. Delicious coffees, pastries, croissants, sandwiches and so much more.  All at very reasonable prices.  Mention that you are a client of Dutchies E-Cycle and Alexandre, or the staff will have a special treat added to your order at no charge.  Then, like a true Parisienne, sit out front to take in the view and watch the people go by.

Nu Love Restaurant & Beach bar

Right in the heart of the boardwalk you will find Nu Love, Restaurant & Beach Bar.

A very impressive menu of seafood, all beautifully prepared or a delicious burger from the grill or a wide selection of wonderful salads and so much more.  Enjoy them with an island cocktail or cold beverage while you sit on the terrace and take in the view. A favorite Dutchie’s recommendation is to top it all off with an ice-cream cone.  Mention that you are a client of Dutchies E-Cycle and get a large cone for the price of a small.  Amazing on a hot day.   Also receive a 10% discount off your food order.  A great place to take a break from cycling and really enjoy yourself.
